Music is a language. So in order to perform and compose songs, taking music courses online or in person will benefit every musician.
Reading music notation is necessary if the musician is serious about earning income, performing, teaching or composing and arranging scores or lead sheets for singers who need their songs copyrighted.
Though I have been performing and composing for years, I have to practice and improve my music knowledge as a daily routine.

Let’s talk about how to practice with specific goal. Example is being able to play all major scales on the guitar. So you would need to purchase a book on how to play scales on the guitar.
Once you have the material, set up a practice schedule. It could be 1 hour and up per day for 5 days a week. Begin with one hour per day and don’t rush. Consistency is the key to mastering scales on the guitar, piano etc.
